Dubai has announced the start of the Traffic Incidents Management Project's second phase. The project will cover 15 highways and major streets and span 425 kilometers from 2023 to 2025, intends to lower secondary injury-related incidents, make a better traffic flow, and provide instant clearing of motor vehicles involved in accidents.
The initiative is carried out in cooperation between the Dubai Police and the RTA (Roads and Transport Authority) of Dubai. According to Mattar Al Tayer, the Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, the major purpose of this project is to make sure an instant intervention to remove vehicles involved in traffic incidents or those that break down on roads, streamline the traffic at accident sites, ease traffic congestion, and reduce the time it takes to clear vehicles involved in incidents.
This project's objectives will also assist the Dubai Police in controlling traffic during major incidents and preventing the triggering of additional incidents brought on by sudden congestion.
The RTA has already begun phase two operations as of January 2023. Seven roads are in the project to be covered this year. These roads are:
• Sheikh Zayed Road (Sheikh Rashid Street, Al Ittihad Street)
• Al Khail Road (Phase 1)
• Dubai-Al Ain Road
• Al Yalayes Road
• Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road
• Al Ribat Road
• Airport Road
The four other roads planned to be covered in 2024 are:
• Al Khail Road (Phase II)
• Emirates Road
• Jebel Ali - Lehbab Road
• Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Road
In 2025, the next four additional roads will be covered, and they are:
• Dubai-Hatta Road
• Umm Suqeim Street
• Expo Street
• Hessa Street
Al Tayer added that "the selection of routes was based on certain factors, such as the intensity of traffic, especially during the peak hours, and the increasing vehicle breakdowns and incidents."
An Instant Intervention at the Spot
On major roads and highways, the authorities have spotted some central points for placing fast intervention vehicles. This promises instant arrival and quick intervention at the scene of the accident or whatever the incident is.
The Traffic Incidents Management Unit will handle minor incidents on the road that don't need police personnel present, handle vehicles involved in incidents or that breakdown, offer instant management of traffic incident sites and surrounding streets, and restore traffic. These all seem to be simple to handle.
The unit directs traffic around incident scenes and on nearby roads, helps out on the roadways, supports the police in emergencies, guards parked cars, and assists with traffic during events. Phase one of the project, according to Lieutenant-General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, commander-in-chief of the Dubai Police, was a big win with planned objectives. It also demonstrated the project's viability and its capacity to lower secondary injury-related situations and make a better traffic flow during incidents.
